Late Henson strike gives Ospreys the win

A Gavin Henson penalty in the dying minutes secured the points for the Ospreys against Glasgow Warriors.

Gavin Henson - crucial penalty
Until Henson stepped up to convert the 45-metre effort the match seemed destined to end in a draw.

It took the Warriors until only the third minute to open the scoring with a Dan Parks penalty goal - after the Ospreys had failed to release the ball at a ruck. The Ospreys had a chance to level but Gavin Henson was wide of the mark with a seventh-minute penalty effort. Despite the Ospreys having plenty of possession the home side gave away a soft try when scrum-half Sam Pinder charged down Shaun Connor´s attempted clearance kick.

It left Glasgow with a 10-0 advantage which would have been just the start Sean Lineen would have dreamed of in his first game in charge as Warriors coach. But he would not have liked the way the Ospreys came back with a try for Richard Mustoe, who popped up on the other wing to take the scoring pass from Sonny Parker.

The problem for Ospreys, however, was that they were trying to play too much adventurous rugby against a good Glasgow defence. And a victim of that adventure was wing Shane Williams, who was substituted after 33 minutes for Andrew Bishop. The Ospreys continued to enjoy a wealth of possession but it was Glasgow who scored again with a second Parks penalty giving them a 13-5 interval lead.

But within 14 minutes of the interval the Ospreys were level. First Steve Tandy went in for his side´s second try in the right corner following good work by Henson. And after Glasgow were penalised for a collapsed scrum Shaun Connor made it 13-13.

A draw had looked like a fair result as both sides struggled to get the winning score. On 77 minutes Parks attempted a snap drop-goal but his attempt sailed wide of the left upright. And then with a minute left on the clock Henson stepped up to put over the winning penalty from 45 metres out.
