| Lynn Howells' Celtic Warriors came, saw and conquored a lacklustre Borders side with a 49-12 victory at Netherdale |
The Celtic Warriors signalled their intent in the Celtic League with a thumping victory they will go a long way to help galvanise the fanbase for the newly formed region.
The fusion of Bridgend and Pontypridd looked like a match made in heaven as they ran rings around a bemused Borders, scoring five tries in the process.
Shaun James scored twice, and Tongan World Cup wing Aisea Havili was one of their try scorers, while other tries came from Gareth Wyatt and Nick Kelly.
The Warriors were bolstered by the boot of the ever dependable Neil Jenkins - the former Wales outside-half sent over a total of six penalties and three conversions for a 24-point personal haul.
The Warriors led by 31-0 after a dominant first half, and in the second period, took their feet off the gas, finishing up comfortable winners.
Borders, under Kiwi coach Tony Gilbert, struggled to find their feet in the absence of fly-half Gregor Townsend, and had captain Kevin Utterson and debutant flanker Dan Kane to thank for their only two tries, both in the second half. Gareth Morton added a conversion.
