| Reivers, beset by injuries, were forced back in the opening exchanges as the home side looked for early points. But it was to the visitors' credit that their doggedness in defence restricted Edinburgh to a single Chris Paterson penalty.
Borders responded with a period of pressure of their own, but handling errors by Craig Hamilton and Bruce Douglas at crucial moments ensured that the league's bottom club did not trouble the scorers.
Reivers suffered a blow with John Dalziel's sinbinning. And though Phil Godman's poor pass did not punish this immediately Edinburgh still scored the first try in the 33rd minute through Allan Jacobsen; Paterson kicking a good conversion in a blustery wind.
Calum MacRae got Borders' first three points straight from the restart. These were to be their only points however and Edinburgh secured the victory when Ben Cairns scored between the sticks, again converted by Paterson.
