| All of the Cardiff back-row got involved in the scoring, shown the way to the whitewash by Shellard, whose first try came only two minutes into the contest.
It was converted by Ben Blair but Borders soon fought back with a Calum MacRae penalty and a Simon Danielli try thanks to a misplaced Nicky Robinson pass.
Blair retook the lead through Blair following Gavin Kerr's sinbinning. But after the Scots had returned to full-strength Blues captain Xavier Rush scored his side's second try, again converted by Blair.
Ben White scored the third before Jamie Robinson broke the Blues' back-row stranglehold by scoring the hosts' bonus-point try.
Garry Law grabbed a Borders consolation but the game ended as it began with a Shellard try.
