| Cuttita's international career spanned 10 years from April 1990 to March 2000, during which time he represented his country 69 times, captaining them on 22 occasions. He played in the Rugby World Cup in both 1991 and 1995, and was in the side which beat Scotland 34-20 in Italy's first Six Nations match in 2000. His twin brother Marcello was also capped on the wing 54 times.
Cuttitta played for L'Aquila from 1985 to 1988 before moving to Milan between 1989 and 1997, where he began helping coach the forwards while still playing.
He returned to South Africa where he grew up, to play in the Currie Cup with Natal Sharks after the World Cup in 1995.
The prop also had spells at Harlequins and Calvisano before moving to Bologna where he was both a player and assistant coach. For the last two years, he worked with Lynn Howells at Leonessa.
Speaking about renewing his working partnership with the Edinburgh head coach, Cuttitta said: "I am happy to be here working with Lynn again and having the opportunity to work with talented players in a professional environment. Getting the scrum right is not a quick fix, but I hope I can play my part in solving any problems and forming a solid scrum."
Lynn Howells added: "Massimo brings a fresh new approach and ideas to scrummaging which are not the same as most coaches. Hopefully over time, the scrum will give us the platform we require to play an expansive game."
