| Cross' transfer comes as Craig Smith will be admitted next week to a London hospital for a procedure to a cervical disc in his neck.
Following surgery of this nature, the recovery time is usually about six months from operation to playing. He hopes to be running in the New Year under supervision.
On his transfer to Edinburgh, Cross said: "I am really looking forward to playing some rugby and helping Edinburgh for the time-being." Prop Geoff Cross joins Edinburgh on a temporary loan basis from the Border Reivers.
Edinburgh head coach Lynn Howells added: "We're pleased to have Geoff on board. He has a reputation of being a very good scrummager and hopefully he'll be with us until the end of the season."
