Former All Blacks prop Dave Hewett has signed a two year contract with Edinburgh.
Hewett joins from Super 12 outfit Canterbury Crusaders, where he has played for the past six years.

He has 22 tests for New Zealand, with two midweek games bringing his total number of games for the All Blacks to 24. His last Test appearance was in the 40-13 triumph over France in the third place play-off during the 2003 IRB Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Hewett commented, "I am really looking forward to the experience Edinburgh Rugby has to offer. I played my second Test match for the All Blacks at Murrayfield and really enjoyed my time leading up to that match. The people were really friendly when we were out and about in the city."

Frank Hadden, head coach, said: "Dave will be a fantastic asset to Edinburgh Rugby and reflects our ambition to re-establish ourselves amongst the top clubs in Europe."

Todd Blackadder, Edinburgh Rugby captain, said: "It is great that Edinburgh have secured the services of Dave, who I have played alongside for four years with Canterbury and The Crusaders. He has a great work ethic, is an ideal team man and will bring a lot to this club.

"He brings tremendous experience to our front row and we will look for him to help up-skill that area of play. I believe he will be a major positive influence and help push this club towards greater things," he added.

In other Edinburgh news  player-coach Blackadder has urged the Scottish Rugby Union to offer him a new contract.

The 33-year-old has been in Scotland since November 2001 and wants to continue his work with the governing body.

Blackadder told the Edinburgh Evening News: ``I want to get my situation sorted and, if it is not done and dusted within two weeks, it would be too late really.''

The SRU recently appointed former Scotland international Carl Hogg as a coach.

Now Blackadder fears that arrival may see him return to New Zealand.

He said: ``Carl Hogg's arrival might mean he would apply for my job here and I need to know one way or another if I'm wanted because May would be too long to wait.''
